Most people think interior design starts after the build.
But some of our favorite projects begin long before construction ever starts.
The term “interior design” can feel a little broad these days. Some designers focus on styling and furnishing once the home is complete. Others, like us, are involved from the very beginning, helping shape the way the home will actually function, feel, and live long before drywall goes up.
That early stage is what we call phase one.
Phase one is where we shape the foundation of your home behind the scenes. Before a contractor lifts a finger, we’re reviewing floor plans, refining layouts, planning selections, and making sure your home truly supports the way you live.
This stage is less about decorating and more about intentional planning.
While a home can look beautiful on paper and still feel frustrating to live in.
This is often the part people don’t immediately associate with interior design. Most homeowners think designers come in once it’s time to choose furniture or finishes. But in new construction, some of the most important design decisions happen before ground is even broken.
During phase one, we review things like:
Having an interior designer involved early means your home is designed with intention from the very beginning, not retrofitted later.
Before the blueprint is finalized, we’re able to advocate for your needs beyond the structure itself. We catch the details that often go overlooked or unquestioned until it’s too late.
The awkward hallway transitions.
The missing storage.
Awkward room placements
The window placements that just don’t make sense.
And the later these decisions are addressed, the more expensive, difficult, and sometimes impossible they become to change.
Instead of making selections room by room as the build progresses, we create a full vision early on so every material, finish, and architectural detail feels connected from the start.
Most importantly, phase one gives our clients confidence.
New construction comes with hundreds of decisions, and having a designer involved early helps remove the overwhelm, prevent costly changes later, and ensure the home feels just as good to live in as it looks on paper.
That’s exactly why projects like our current Dallas new construction are some of our favorites to be part of.
We were brought in during the early stages of the build, before construction fully began, which allowed us to help shape the home from the inside out rather than simply decorating it later on.
During phase one, we worked through floor plan reviews, architectural details, and interior selections long before a contractor lifted a finger.
This is where some of the most important design decisions happen.

One of the biggest advantages of being involved early is catching the small details that are easy to miss on a floor plan but make a huge difference once the home is built.
On paper, everything can technically “work.”
But when you start thinking about how the home will actually function day to day, certain decisions begin to stand out.
In our Dallas project, one of those moments was the pantry window placement.

At first glance, nothing seemed wrong with it on the architectural plans. But once we reviewed the space from an interior perspective, we realized the window placement wasn’t supporting the functionality of the room. And in a fully custom home, we believe every detail should feel intentional.
It’s the kind of detail that could easily be overlooked during construction, only to become frustrating later when the space is finally being used.
These are the exact moments where early collaboration matters most.

Throughout this project, we made thoughtful adjustments to improve flow, functionality, and long-term usability before construction ever began.
Once the floor plans, elevations, and edits are finalized, we move into what we call the layering stage: the selections.
This is where the home truly starts to come to life visually.
It’s also usually the stage where clients become the most excited because they can finally begin to see the full vision coming together.
Materials.
Tile.
Flooring.
Cabinetry.
Hardware.
Fixtures.
Paint colors.
Every selection plays a role in shaping the atmosphere of the home.
And how do we help clients feel confident in those decisions?
Seeing your future home come to life before ground is broken is one of the most exciting parts of the process.
Because what if you could walk into your home visually before the builders and contractors ever lifted a finger?
That’s a huge part of our signature process.
We help clients feel completely confident before approving selections, finalizing plans, or moving forward with procurement. Every detail is thoughtfully considered ahead of time so the entire home feels cohesive, intentional, and aligned from the very beginning.
We take this:

& present you something like this:

Bringing an interior designer in early allows your home to be designed holistically from the very beginning, rather than trying to solve problems once construction is already underway.
It means decisions are made with intention.
Layouts are thoughtfully considered.
Selections feel cohesive.
And your home is designed around the way you actually live, not just how it looks on paper.
For our clients, this level of involvement creates a far more elevated and seamless experience throughout the entire build process.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by hundreds of decisions, they feel guided. Confident. Clear on the vision before construction even begins.
Luxury interior design is not just about the photographs and the ‘aesthetic’.
It’s about the experience of creating a home with care, clarity, and purpose from the very start.
And while most people only see the finished home in the end, some of the most important work happens long before the first wall is built.
