As an interior designer, every project brings unique challenges and joys, but the Zanzibar Residence was truly special. This dreamy California home redesigned was a full-scale virtual design project—planned and executed while I was living in Florida. It was an exciting opportunity to blend modern coastal aesthetics with warm, inviting textures and a fresh, airy ambiance.
The homeowners, in the midst of renovations, needed guidance on space planning, selecting finishes, and creating a cohesive design that reflected their vision. From paint colors to lighting, furnishings, and decor, every element had to come together seamlessly. Given that this was one of my first large-scale virtual design projects, the process was both exhilarating and rewarding.
The design concept embraced the essence of California modern coastal style. We focused on layering neutral tones, natural textures, and soft, organic elements to create a timeless yet contemporary feel. The dining room, for example, features a stunning wooden table complemented by woven chairs and a statement chandelier that adds just the right amount of texture and warmth. Greenery was incorporated throughout the home to bring in a touch of nature and enhance the relaxed, coastal vibe.
The kitchen and living spaces were designed to be both functional and stylish. A deep navy island grounds the kitchen, while woven barstools and soft gold lighting fixtures add an element of sophistication. This mix of modern and organic textures continues into the living room, where we selected light, neutral furniture with layered textiles for added depth and comfort. A large, plush area rug ties the space together, making it both elegant and cozy.
The bedroom exudes serenity with a clean, neutral palette, luxurious linens, and carefully curated decor. Black-framed mirrors add contrast to the soft whites and beiges, while a woven bench at the foot of the bed adds another layer of texture.
When the project was finally completed, I had the opportunity to visit California and see the transformation in person. The finished home was breathtaking—a perfect balance of warmth, elegance, and effortless coastal charm. Looking at the before-and-after photos, it’s incredible to see how every carefully chosen element came together to create a space that truly feels like home.
This project reinforced my love for virtual design and the power of thoughtful, intentional interiors. Whether designing in-person or remotely, my goal is always to create spaces that are not only beautiful but also deeply functional and reflective of the people who live in them. The Zanzibar Residence is a testament to the magic that happens when vision, design, and collaboration come together seamlessly.
