We love Pinterest and we love Instagram. We save beautiful kitchens at 11pm and feel convinced that the secret to having our life together might just be a warmer white paint color and a very expensive looking coffee table.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with gathering inspiration online. You’ll find, most interior designers use Pinterest and Instagram as tools every single day. These platforms are incredible for discovering styles, identifying patterns in what you love, and helping you articulate a vision for your home.
But somewhere between saving your twentieth “neutral living room inspiration” post and wondering if your own home should suddenly have fewer visible clutter, it becomes very easy to forget one important thing:
Instagram spaces are often designed for the photo and clients often forget that real home are designed for real life.
Social media has a way of showing us the most beautiful version of everything, ‘the best bits’. No one’s going to show you a half drank wine bottle left on the counter from the night before.
Most inspiration images are styled long before the photo is taken. Designers intentionally place every object and remove all real-life clutter to make it ‘picture perfect’.
This goes for almost every social media post – what looks effortless in a photo often requires quite a bit of preparation in real life.
That ‘relaxed’ throw blanket has likely been adjusted several times before the photo was taken.
Real homes have mail on the counter, shoes by the door, and the occasional pile of laundry in the corner. Those details prove people actually live there.

Some of the most saved spaces online are visually stunning, but they do not always leave much room for personality.
It is very easy to fall into the idea that a home needs to look a certain way in order to feel finished, especially when the same styles appear repeatedly across Pinterest and Instagram. Neutral palettes, styled surfaces, and minimal spaces can feel elevated, but they can also start to feel slightly impersonal if every decision is based on what photographs rather than what feels meaningful.
Personality never comes from copying a single image exactly, it usually comes from allowing your home to feel layered, lived in, and slightly imperfect in a way that feels entirely your own.
Pinterest is incredibly helpful for identifying patterns in what you love, but it can also create the feeling that your home needs to follow a specific formula in order to feel successful.
People tend to connect with a feeling more than an exact room. You may notice that many of the spaces you save have something in common, even if the individual pieces look completely different from one another.
When you focus on the feeling rather than the exact details, it becomes much easier to create a home that feels personal instead of performative.
Trends will always change, but spaces that feel authentic tend to feel relevant for much longer.
Your home does not need to look identical to anything online in order to feel beautiful!
Working with an interior designer goes beyond recreating an image from Pinterest or Instagram. We use inspiration to understand your style, then translate those ideas into something that works beautifully in your home.
With us, inspiration always plays a role in the process, but we never treat it as a strict blueprint.
Most importantly, we design spaces to feel personal.
It reflects your routines, your preferences, your priorities, and the details that make a house feel like your home rather than a copy of someone else’s.

Pinterest and Instagram can be incredibly helpful tools when used thoughtfully. They allow you to discover styles, refine preferences, and better understand what resonates with you.
The key is remembering that inspiration is meant to guide your decisions and not replace them.
Remember: homes evolve naturally over time, reflecting the people who live there rather than the algorithm that suggested them and while social media can show you beautiful ideas, it cannot tell your story.
And the most memorable homes are always the ones that feel like they belong to someone specific.
Not perfectly styled for everyone, but perfectly suited to you.
If you’ve been saving inspiration on Pinterest but aren’t sure how to bring it to life in your own home, you’re not alone. Translating ideas into a cohesive, functional design requires more than just good taste, it takes strategy, experience, and a clear plan.
