When people renovate, their focus naturally goes to the big decisions first.
They tend to allocate more of their budget to the “larger” elements like the sofa or the type of stone for their countertops.
And while those choices absolutely matter, they’re not what make a home feel finished.
That’s what happens in the final layer.
Think of it this way.
A beautiful outfit can still look a little plain or incomplete without the accessories you pair with it.
A home works the same way.

Think about how often you interact with your hardware.
From the moment you open a drawer in the morning to closing cabinets at night, it’s constant. You’re reaching for handles and door hardware throughout the day without even thinking about it.
These are some of the most used elements in your home, and yet they’re so often treated like an afterthought.
I see it all the time. A beautifully designed kitchen, thoughtful cabinetry, stunning finishes… paired with what feels like a quick, budget-driven hardware decision. Whether it’s something pulled from Amazon or a vintage find that felt like a “good deal,” it naturally takes away from everything else.
On their own, those choices might seem small. But in the context of the whole space, they matter more than people realise.
Hardware isn’t just functional.
It’s felt. (literally)
And when it’s not right, the entire room feels slightly off, even if you can’t immediately explain why.

Lighting is even more transformative.
It’s easy to focus on the pendants or sconces you fall in love with online, and I absolutely include these pieces in where I believe your budget should go. But every single lighting decision affects how your home is actually experienced.
Right down to the bulb you choose.
Lighting absolutely creates the right ambience. But people forget that the lighting you pick will reflect off the materials you choose. It can make those warm oak cabinets you’re so proud of feel.. flat.
Not only that, but it’s the difference between a space that feels bright and clinical, and one that feels inviting. The temperature of the bulb alone can completely shift how a room reads.
You can design the most beautiful space, but if the lighting isn’t right, it can undo everything.
The gloss of the countertop, the perfect wood floor, every finish.
That’s how powerful it is.
There are always places in a renovation where compromises can be made, this just isn’t one of them.
You see it all over the internet – DIY gurus telling you to splurge elsewhere.
It feels like an easy win. It’s “just a handle” or, it’s “just a knob.” They’re small, no one will notice… right?
Wrong.
These elements are used so frequently and seen so often, that they reveal their quality over time in a way other decisions don’t.
When the quality isn’t there, it shows. Finishes wear faster than expected, sometimes shifting to that not-so-lovely green tone if you’re really unlucky. Pieces loosen over time. Lighting can feel harsher. The consistency starts to slip. And, in the nicest way possible, they look exactly as inexpensive as they were.
It’s the equivalent of wearing a copper ring that turns your finger green.
Not cute.
Over time, it becomes noticeable, and once you see it, it becomes hard to ignore.
This doesn’t mean everything needs to be expensive.
But the right things do need to be considered.
Design isn’t about excess, but it is a skill knowing where attention matters most. Where a small decision will have a lasting impact.
And these are the decisions that do.
The difference between a home that looks nice and one that feels thoughtfully designed rarely comes down to the obvious pieces.
It comes down to the layers.
Lighting and hardware signal that every part of the home has been considered. They create a sense of cohesion that doesn’t need to announce itself.
They simply make everything else work.
Much like the jewelry that completes an outfit, they are small details that elevate everything around them.
And once you notice their impact, you start to understand what truly makes a home feel finished.
If your home feels like it’s missing something, it’s often not the big pieces.
It’s the details.
I guide every layer of a home so it feels cohesive, intentional, and beautifully resolved.
If you’re ready for your home to feel complete in a way you can’t quite put into words, I’d love to help.
At Collins & Co. Interiors, we believe the smallest details often carry the most weight. From lighting and hardware to materials and layout, every decision is made with intention to create homes that feel elevated, functional, and timeless.
Because a well-designed home doesn’t just look beautiful.
